Creature Emerging

A monster emerges from the ocean to destroy a suspension bridge (10 weeks)

A camera track was done on the plate in 3d Equalizer. The camera was later exported to Maya where the creature was animated. Both the creature and camera were then imported into the Houdini scene.

The bridge was modelled procedurally in Houdini, where it was then given a swaying animation in sops. Only a part of the bridge that would interact with the creature was fractured and used for destruction.

The destruction simulations consisted of RBD with post metal bending in sops, a wire sim in vellum for more detailed wire deformations, as well as a layer of debris using the pop solver, that was influenced by an airfield around the creature and bridge collapse.

A layer of dust and dust particulates simulations was then layered on.

The water around the creature and bridge collapse was simmed as a flip and later blended into a static ocean spectrum.

A custom whitewater solver was used to create whitewater, using velocity smoothing, and an airfield advection where the whitewater was turning into fine mist.
The whitewater was broken down into wedges and simmed in multiple slices.

An additional layer of mist was simulated with a smoke solver.

Renders was done using Karma in Houdini.

Render layers were then composited in nuke, where an additional noised alpha mask flowing down the creature was used to create a sheeting effect.
